#RightToDie under the spotlight at World Federation of Right to Die Societies' 22nd biennial conference 2018 in Cape Town

The World Federation of Right-to-Die Societies (WFRtDS), in association with DignitySA, is holding its 22nd biennial conference in Cape Town from 6-9th September 2018 at the Cape Sun Hotel. You are invited to join the conversation.

The WFRtDS, founded in 1980, consists of 50 right-to-die organisations from 25 countries. The Federation provides an international portal for organisations working to secure or protect the rights of individuals to self-determination at the end of their lives.

The timing of this conference is likely to coincide with the South Africa High Court hearing of the requests for an assisted death by a terminally ill palliative care specialist, Dr Sue Walter, and a businessman living with Motor Neuron Disease, Dieter Harck. This court hearing comes as a consequence of the Supreme Court of Appeal overruling a previous High Court decision to grant the late Advocate Robin Stransham-Ford a physician assisted death in 2015.

The conference theme is: #AssistedDying: Human rights in the 21stCentury. Global thought leaders will share their knowledge and expertise on campaign strategies, medical, legal, ethical, constitutional, cultural, and religious issues related to assisted dying.

Keynote speakers include Deborah Ziegler (the mother of Brittany Maynard whose assisted death in Oregon went viral internationally) and Professor Willem Landman (founding CEO of The Ethics Institute (TEI), past Professor of Medical Ethics at the University of North Carolina, board member and co-founder of DignitySA).  Our esteemed speakers hail from Switzerland, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Mexico, the USA, and South Africa.

Assisted Dying is one of the most hotly debated topics of our time and a robust debate between key role players will be a highlight of the event.

This is a defining moment in the country’s history and DignitySA invites those with an interest or knowledge in the field to attend the conference on the 7th and 8th of September to become better informed.

Medical and legal professionals (and scholars) are especially welcome and will be given a unique opportunity to liaise and debate with leading thinkers and authorities in the right-to-die movement.

Professor Sean Davison
President, World Federation of Right to Die Societies
Chairman, DignitySA
